Tokyo Arts & Music music · jazz · art

Hip-hop as a club format in Tokyo means nights built around rap records and the DJ's handling of them — cutting, blending and mixing across eras — often with live MCs or a full performance bill on the same ticket.

It programmes differently from electronic nights. Sets are shorter, the track is the unit rather than the mix, and the crowd faces the booth or the stage as much as each other. That suits venues with a stage and multiple floors: clubasia in Shibuya's Maruyamacho regularly runs hip-hop and live bills, sometimes on the same night as a techno room upstairs.

Doors are usually around 23:00, and headline sets tend to land earlier in the night than at a techno party.
