bonobo sits in Jingumae, a short walk from Harajuku, and it is the counter-argument to the big Shibuya clubs. Instead of one large floor there are stacked small rooms — a front bar, plus DJ floors on the first and second levels — so a busy night feels less like a club and more like a party in a house.

Music leans left of centre: house, disco, dub, leftfield and whatever the night's crew is into. Door prices are usually around ¥2,000–2,500 including a drink, and nights typically open around 22:00 and run to morning.

Because the rooms are small, the character of the night depends almost entirely on who is playing. It rewards checking the lineup.
