Hard techno is techno pushed to its physical limit: distorted, saturated kick drums, stripped-back arrangements and tempos typically running 145–160 BPM, well above the 130s of classic techno. Where minimal techno works by subtraction, hard techno works by pressure.

The style has driven a wave of younger Tokyo parties since the early 2020s, and it programmes naturally into the late slot — floors at clubasia in Shibuya's Maruyamacho regularly bill hard techno nights from around 23:00 through to morning.

If you are new to it, the practical difference is stamina: sets are relentless by design, and the room usually is too.
